I’ve had the opportunity recently to get to know Jim Christopher, an award-winning author of speculative fiction and thrillers.

His crime thriller “SEE RED” is my recommendation for today.

The blurb is super and compelling:

***

It’s the worst night of Carmen’s life.
Kidnapped from her home. Separated from her loved ones.
Her captors know her family better than she does.
To live, Carmen must out-think her abductors. To escape, she must rekindle her broken daughter’s inner fire and strength. To see the sun again, she’ll expose the darkest of secrets.
And to save her family, Carmen must tear it apart.
Her captors burn to destroy Carmen’s life.
If she survives until morning, she’ll thank them.

***

With a hook like that, I’m not surprised that the reviews are so strong.

“Bloody, visceral.”
“One sweaty read. It’s Stockholm Syndrome on steroids!”
“A high octane story that will have you gasping for breath.”
“Action upon action following more action right from the start … that’s what you can expect.”
“It’s a wild ride!”
“Holy Moley! I finished the book in two hours, it’s that good!”

I asked Jim about his thoughts when he created the book.

“Most of my stories contain speculative elements,” he said, “and for ‘SEE RED‘ I wanted to create a riveting thriller that was human-centered. No supernatural entities, no advanced technology. Just people wanting to do the right thing, and discovering they’re woefully unprepared for the consequences.”

He added that his first goal with any book is to entertain. “From what readers tell me, ‘SEE RED‘ does that in spades. I get regular reviews from readers stating they held their breath reading some scenes, and that they could not put the book down until it was finished.”

And the entertaining story enables his secondary goals. “I refer to these as the sticky bits. These are situations, characters, or  perspectives in the book that the reader is still noodling long after the book is out of their hands.”

Jim’s an interesting guy. His first novel, “Season of Waiting,” was a Finalist in the 2021 American Fiction Awards for Psychological Thrillers. His second book, “Sick as Our Secrets,” won first place in the BookFest Awards for Supernatural Thrillers. Other books include supernatural thriller “This Is Goodbye for Now,” crime thriller “Killdeer,” and the science fiction series “Gradient Descent.”

He’s even more interesting when he describes his background.

He describes his work history as a “crooked path — meandering from stagehand, audio engineer, carpenter, cognitive psychologist, behavioral researcher, musician, software developer, learning sciences advisor, to whatever I might do today.”

And he stays busy. New books (“Gradient Descent: Business Intelligence” and “Gradient Descent: Theory of Anything“) are coming out in early 2026, and a new supernatural thriller, “Cult of Possibility,” is scheduled for late 2026.
